Kentucky leather goods business making over a half-million PPE face shields for frontline medical workers

The story continues of small businesses in America stepping up in an effort to fight COVID-19. And our story is from a small business in Louisville making a massive impact right here in Kentucky.

Local leather goods business, Clayton & Crume, has flipped their workshop upside down to help frontline medical doctors, nurses, and staff with the shortage of PPE medical face shields.

After feeling the early effects of COVID-19, C&C temporarily shut their doors on leather production in order to assess the situation and what’s to come. One day after the shops halt, Clay & Tyler leaned in on a pillar of their business, their local community. They heard the fears from friends and family about the shortage of medical PPE in hospitals, and so they sprung into action with what they knew best: create.

They turned to the idle machines, and with the resources they had in the shop, they made their first prototype of a medical face shield. Though rudimentary, it was a start. They texted pictures to friends and family and asked if frontline workers could use these - the responses was an overwhelming yes.

Within 24 hours, they were on the phone with the State of Kentucky, Governor Beshear’s office, and the state agencies involved in purchasing and distribution of medical PPE. That day the state requested a large scale production of over a half-million face shields.

Since the order, Clayton & Crume has received phone calls from across the country.

This is #TeamKentucky and this is why small businesses are the backbone of this country.

They said production on their leather goods will continue during the face shield production. Go support their business online at ClaytonandCrume.com
