Another taco spot ... worth writing home about

Not too long ago, Taco Luchador was the only go-to spot for upscale “craft” tacos. They dominated the Louisville taqueria scene and have exploded by recently adding their fifth restaurant and executing a major renovation and expansion to their flagship restaurant on Baxter Ave.

Since their opening, there have been many new players (and competitive expansions) in the taco fight. To name a few, Migo, Taco City, MexA Tacos, Zombie Taco and Bandito all have either added restaurants or are new altogether in the last 5 years.

Add Taco Choza to that list. The St. Matthews taqueria is not far from Luchador’s #2 location across Shelbyville Road. Tucked back in the massive parking lot behind the Smoothie King, Drakes, and Mojito in Havana, it’s out of sight but not out of mind for Louisville taco lovers. Taco Choza was open for the entirety of 2019 and they have had the traction and the reviews to keep them going. On the very active Louisville Yelp page, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a customer review less than 3/5 stars. Those are few and far between and typically has nothing to do with the food. Taco Choza currently ranks 2nd only to Luchador on taquerias on the Louisville Yelp page.

Our experience was no different than those trustworthy ‘Elites’ on Yelp. We got several things to try since it was our first time in. The counter service could not have been friendlier or more helpful. She suggested, for tacos, the mahi-mahi and the al pastor options. We wanted to try some other traditional Mexican options too so we went with the recommended El Compadre Burrito and the Quesadilla Liz.

Unfortunately, the tacos looked so incredible the phone didn’t “eat first.” The al pastor was the first victim and did not disappoint. The mahi-mahi was next, crushing the fear of a boring fish taco. It too was an exceptional taco that we will certainly go back for exclusively.

After a nice appetizer, the daunting task of the quesadilla and burrito were next. Measuring in on a massive 14-inch tortilla each, we had no shot in finishing either of them even though both were great entree options. The El Compadre Burrito was especially good because it was loaded with everything. The Choza staff suggested a shrimp and steak mix and after eating (half of it) we would agree. The quesadilla was a nice hearty option but there’s no questioning what Taco Choza is best at; tacos.

We highly recommend hitting up Taco Choza, which is located at 3922 Westport Road. A great new addition to the taco and Mexican food scene in Louisville. Even though there are more and more taco options all the time, we think Taco Choza will be here to stay.
