5 Things To Do in Louisville While Maintaining "Social Distancing"
While seeking to take necessary precautions during one of the strangest times we can recall, there is the possibility our “social distancing” can lead to loneliness, depression, or simply, boredom. We endorse the protective measures the city is taking, no matter what ends up cancelled or postponed. Our civil duty to respect and protect the most vulnerable (and ourselves) also comes with the challenge to live differently and make the most of our time while distancing ourselves.
We took the time to put together a list of activities aimed to keep morale high while keeping our distance.
Visit a park you’ve never been to
If you head to Reservoir Park you’ll find runners and walkers circling The Crescent Hill Water Reservoir (a Historic Place on the National Registry), a public golf course, tennis courts, and lots of dogs running around the open grassy area. Louisville is known nation-wide for its parks - we have 120 of them! This park can get lost in routine visits to Seneca and Cherokee, but Reservoir Park should not be overlooked. Take this opportunity to find your new favorite park in Louisville.
Make a Homemade Pizza
Being at home more than usual can come with some satisfaction if we let our creative juices flow. Maybe cooking isn’t the way your creativity usually shines, but pizza is an easy way to boost your confidence in the kitchen. We’ve seen endless attempts to perfect the best pie here in Louisville. We are especially eager to see if the new Jake & Ellwoods pulls it off with their authentic Chicago deep dish. Spinelli’s brings us pizza inspired by Philadelphia, The Post prefers a thin NY style, and Impellizzeri’s takes the claim for ‘Louisville-style pizza’, whatever that means. We love our pizza here, and we’re about to love it even more when Goodfellas expands from Lexington. In the meantime, let us know what you come up with in your kitchen! Here are a couple recipes we like that will get you started. (HINT: Make the dough in recipe #2 for more fun)
Go Wild at the Zoo
The zoo is always a nostalgic, fun way to spend the day. Luckily, the Louisville Zoo is one of the few attractions in the city where it makes sense to stay open to the public. As far as we know, the zoo animals (and your doggo) can not contract or contribute to the spread of virus. The zoo, a large, open-air environment, certainly poses a much lower risk in passing any sickness. The Zoo also issued a Health Update regarding their own actions and precautions.
In addition to the typical zoo viewing experience, the Wild Lights: Asian Lantern Festival is continuing as planned through April 25. Get the Wild Lights tickets here.
Get back to MAKING
Many of us have picked up a creative hobby, but let the hobby go since life gets busy. Take this less busy time to wipe the dust off the sewing machine, the old guitar, or whatever your hobby may be. We have a series dedicated to local makers called Maker Monday. On the first Monday of the month, we feature local creatives doing something interesting, and we bring their stories and personalities to you. Read up on our inaugural MM here, where we feature a veteran who now owns a uniquely successful business. Get back to creating and making - maybe you’ll end up on Hello Louisville Maker Monday.
Spring Cleaning - no excuses this year
A task that many of us may aspire to tackle each year - a deep clean of the entire house (if started at all, a deep cleaning is rarely completely). This is the year. If not just for general cleanliness and a tidy crib, a good disinfecting may go a long way for your mental and physical health while your cooped up inside. Let’s clean those windows, go to the deepest nooks behind the toilet, mop, and feel a little better about ourselves afterwards.
One of the most important actions to improve mental wellbeing is to stay informed. Here are a couple of reliably-sourced podcasts that are factual, scientific, and informative about COVID-19.
Keep reading Hello Louisville, too. We will keep you updated on the great things our city is a part of, even during odd times like now. We hope to lift spirits, stay on top of what’s happening around us, and bring the Louisville news in a light, fun and interesting tone.
Got a fun idea for ‘distanced’ entertainment? Get in our DMs and we may add it to our list!
