St. Patty's prep: Goodwood Blessing of the Keg set for March 12
With St. Patrick’s Day just a few days away and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade taking over the Highlands on Saturday, it’s time to remember another local tradition tied to the holiday: The Blessing of the Keg.
Now in it’s 14th year, the Blessing of the Keg Celebration is a joint venture between Goodwood Brewing Company and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. This year, the event takes place Thursday, March 12.
Father Joe Fowler will bless the keg at Goodwood at about 6 p.m., but when doors open, guests will first be entertained by the Bold Roberts while they sip their pints and eagerly await the blessing. And, yes, this event tends to get crowded, so get there early. Heck, don’t be surprised if you see Mayor Greg Fischer there with a pint in hand.
Following the blessing, the party then moves to O’Shea’s Irish Pub, where the whole crew will march in behind a bagpiper. What awaits is, you guessed it, even more beer, along with a special food option consisting of corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash, shepherds pie and Guinness stew.
Two beers will be available this year: Big Fella, an imperial stout, and the traditional Bourbon Barrel Stout. The tradition originally began in 2006 when the brewery celebrated the birthday of latter, which is the brewery’s signature beer.
The blessed keg(s) will also be transported to O’Shea’s, where they will be tapped and the beer will be sold through St. Patrick’s Day. Be sure to wear green.
