New Wave Burritos owners to open Toasty's Tavern in Shelby Park June 22
The guys behind the popular New Wave Burritos will open their new concept, Toasty’s Tavern, in the Shelby Park neighborhood June 22.
Nate Sturdevant and Matt Flip teamed up with WFPK disc jockey Aaron Chadwell, for the new concept, which will feature affordable late-night bites to go with draft beer and specialty cocktails.
The menu at the new bar, located at 1258 S Shelby St., looks nothing like the burrito concept – instead it features sandwiches, appetizers and breakfast items that are a step up from basic bar food, and many items lean toward the breakfast side for late-nighters.
For example, the loaded fries at Toasty’s won’t be smothered in standard cheese and chili, but rather cheddar, sausage gravy, bacon, pickled jalapenos and more. The Eggs menu offers a four-cheese omelet, a loaded omelet, and eggs with toast. Sandwiches from a cheeseburger to a fried chicken sandwich to a pair of breakfast sandwiches and a vegan dog for those who aren’t into meat. Sides of bacon, sausage, sauces and other items also are available.
Menu items start at $5 and all but two are under $10.
“We're wanting to have an affordable late night food and drink option to suit the people in the Shelby Park area,” Chadwell said, “and basically anyone who enjoys great food at a good price.”
Signature cocktails ($9) include a watermelon mint margarita, flavored daquiris, an L.I.T. and a bee’s knees, with classic cocktails priced at $6.
The refurbished building previously was listed as warehouse space, although it is in a stretch of Shelby Street that features both residential homes and small businesses.
Toasty’s will be open seven days per week starting at 5 p.m. Closing hours may vary and will likely be around midnight until restrictions from coronavirus are lifted, at which point the business may be open until as late as 2 a.m.
